And this is the Juniata Men's Basketball Show. Welcome listeners. I'm Tom Frank and I'm joined each and every week by Drew Beskett, aka Biz, and your Juniata head basketball coach, greg Curley. As we talk all things Juniata Men's College Basketball, biz we got two things to address. Number one coach is out on the road. Yes so we're in uncharted territory here we're gonna. We're gonna uncharted territory we're gonna, we're gonna go after it, but we might have a few special guests on throughout throughout the, throughout the record, all right yeah, this is like the whole.

Biz Besket:

This is a whole new uh, a whole new uh voyage that we're on here it is it is it could be an interesting one.

Tom Frank:

This could be who knows, who knows. But before we get to that, can I just say wow about the commanders last night the commanders yes I mean I know your steelers are long gone, but I mean I gotta live it up here.

Biz Besket:

This is a, this is a rare, a rare thing steelers will be long gone until somebody else is gone, but that's all right right, it was an incredible game last night, though. That was an incredible game man. I was shocked. I did take Washington with the points and the over, Thank God.

Tom Frank:

I appreciate that I appreciate that. Now this does put the alumni game weekend. I now have an added twist to it because I have to now jump in that car early the next morning to rush home because I got to be complete.

Biz Besket:

You were gone by.

Tom Frank:

I was, because the Eagles were in it last year, weren't they? Yeah, yeah. So now, who do I root for, eagles or Rams Eagles? My wife is heavily vested and it could be a heck of a family rivalry. But do I want that level of stress in my life?

Biz Besket:

I mean, you're going to have that level of stress whether they win or lose, aren't you?

Tom Frank:

Probably true. Yeah, I think I want the Eagles.

Biz Besket:

There will be much nation at your house.

Tom Frank:

I think I want the Eagles and I want the Ravens to win, and then all of let me explain why All of football will be right here, and then we'll have Kansas City out here.

Biz Besket:

I can't stay in Kansas City now I can't either. They're like the new Patriots man, Get them out of here they are.

Tom Frank:

I don't like them either. Do you see? Like Caitlin Clark, I'm going to root for her, caitlin.

Biz Besket:

Clark's like jumping on the bandwagon now she was in the box.

Tom Frank:

Well, apparently she's been a longtime fan.

Biz Besket:

Yeah, I'm not buying it.

Tom Frank:

Don't be going after Kaitlyn Clark. I'm a Kaitlyn Clark guy, all right. Yeah, I like her. I'm rooting for her. Hey, she can play. We got a very special show this week.

Biz Besket:

Very special. I believe something's coming up. I've been waiting for this moment for three months. I know you've been waiting for this moment for a long time.

Tom Frank:

We're going to take a break from reality. It's been a tough season up to this point for our Eagles, no doubt about that, but there's a weekend every season that's bigger than the record of any particular season. That's right, right, it's alumni weekend coming up. Junior Adam men's basketball program will be welcoming guys from many, many, many different areas, many different areas, and they're going to give it. They kind of help reshift the boat a little bit, yeah.

Biz Besket:

I mean I'm looking at the list right now. It's a long list of people coming back. That means that they've been indoctrinated into the program and it means something to them and they're coming back to support.

Tom Frank:

I think this could be very big for what we need right now. I believe you're right, we need some old blood coming back. That's right. Giving the new guys a little bit of a pep talk, getting them rallied up, yep. But to give us the lay of the land, we've got to invite on Juniatis best assistant coach, maybe now, maybe ever.

John Kelly:

The great one and only.

Tom Frank:

Nick Hager.

John Kelly:

What's up?

Tom Frank:

guys, hey Coach Hager, hey what's up, appreciate you having me on.

Nick Hager:

He's wearing his alumni sweatshirt.

Biz Besket:

Tom, I think he wants to play Wait a minute.

Tom Frank:

Is that your number 55, or did you graduate in 1955?

Biz Besket:

Good.

Tom Frank:

Lord man, I'm not that old Tom. All right, you wore number 55?

Nick Hager:

I wore 55, yeah.

Tom Frank:

Who the heck wears 55? I never knew that about you.

Nick Hager:

You know I grew up in the time of Jason Williams playing in the NBA. That's true. All right, white chocolate. Yeah, I started my sophomore year in high school. You know sophomores got the last pick of the high school jerseys and 55 was available and you know white chocolate was out doing its thing, in the NBA.

Biz Besket:

So yeah, Now was that back in the day where you couldn't have numbers above five. Oh, yeah, yeah, that was way before that. Remember that you couldn't.

Tom Frank:

That was up until like two years ago. Yeah, I think yeah, so 55. So you took 55 as a sophomore, never thought of changing it and went 55 the rest of the way 55 sophomore year in high school all the way through college.

Biz Besket:

Yep, oh, hey, look where it got him the number one, the number one d3 assistant coach in the country, in the nation.

Tom Frank:

Yeah, I like it All right Now. Do you want to give us any kind of overview before we dive in here? Alumni weekend Give us the run of show.

Nick Hager:

So you mean, like what's going to happen, like on that Saturday?

Tom Frank:

Yeah, the whole day. The whole day yeah.

Nick Hager:

So for us, you know we play the four o'clock game, so we'll be um looking for like around 11 am tip for the alumni game. I know that we get to sleep in a little time. Yeah, the women's team there. They have their alumni game, uh, I believe at nine or nine thirty um, because they have the same weekend. They moved to the same weekend as ours, um, so they have a game, I think at at 9 or 9.30. That we'll be on.

Nick Hager:

After them Two 20-minute halves running clock, probably Looking at the roster here for guys who are going to play, they'll probably appreciate that. So we'll do two 20-minute halves, have it officiated and then, after that's done, give guys a chance to get showered up, get dressed and then we'll have some food over in Ellis Hall, ellis Ballroom, starting at 1 o'clock. Then we tip off at 4 against Granton. So after the game we'll have a place downtown Money Run Tavern. We have the upstairs reserved, so alums that are either playing or not playing. Coming back to the game, we'll have a spot up there for get some food and some drinks and just hang out and enjoy each other's company. So be a full day.

Biz Besket:

Be a good day.

Tom Frank:

I like it.

Biz Besket:

That sounds good, man. Yeah, that was a blast last year.

Nick Hager:

Yeah, I know the alums liked having you guys around talking to you. Got to hear your voices and everything and now the chance to sit down and talk with you and see you, so that was good at all ends.

Tom Frank:

Most importantly, though, we'll be coaching again, team blue, team gold. Now, this will be the second annual Ed Mansberger alumni game right, correct, we're keeping it going, keeping it going.

Nick Hager:

Yep, hopefully that sticks. That's going to be there every year.

Tom Frank:

All right Now, before we get to the draft, I have a few questions. Is Jeremy Hayes coming back?

Nick Hager:

Yes, jeremy Hayes, I talked to him on the phone. He is coming back. He told me he was going to be limited with playing time, so he's on a minute restriction. Ooh but he will be playing.

Tom Frank:

Why is this? Has he suffered an injury?

Nick Hager:

Yeah, with his business. I mean if you guys have seen his videos puts a lot out, he travels all over the place. If he's not healthy I mean he you guys have seen his videos he puts a lot out, he travels all over the place. If he's not healthy, I mean he's out of business. You know he's down, so he's got to make some decisions there. And I think last year he kind of pushed the envelope a little bit.

Tom Frank:

He was the MVP of the game last year.

Nick Hager:

Yeah, so I think he's going to kind of hold on to that, yeah, but I think he's gonna kind of hold on to that and like, yeah, but I think he's gonna be on a minute restriction this year, uh, from what he was telling me.

Biz Besket:

So this is very, very behind the scenes I didn't even know this was out there. This is shay d, and I don't want any tom to have any contact with the officials prior to the game, though, hey I, that's how you, that's how you play the game.

Tom Frank:

You gotta introduce yourself, you gotta get to know him a little bit. Now. Interesting thing about jeremy when I look at this list, he's the only non-pa guy. Am I right? Um, I, you don't have to say yes, because I've done my research I, I know this is for fact I know my stuff. I'm gonna give you a couple other quick stats before we dive in here. We're not gonna see the matchup we wanted to see, biz, I really did kind of want to see Marcus versus Chase.

Biz Besket:

Oh yeah, that would have been good.

Tom Frank:

Now, what do we know about Marcus? Marcus is traveling. What's going?

Biz Besket:

on. We better not have more behind the scenes.

Nick Hager:

Now Marcus did contact me and said he was going to try to make it, but he's not on the list, yeah, if he's, if he's gonna make it, I think he's gonna be a surprise. Uh, show up that morning and, um, you guys, I don't know, you guys have to figure out free throws, free throws to get on which team and like what's uh, what the plan is from there. So, yeah, that's gonna be, uh, I guess, tbd. So tbd.

Tom Frank:

There's six guys coming back from last season's team. Who are we missing?

Nick Hager:

Cade Anzulevich, I talked to him oh because, he's coaching. He's coaching.

Tom Frank:

How are they?

Nick Hager:

I haven't checked recently. I think they won last week, got a couple wins there, kind of the similar boat that we are. But, uh, he, they have a game at three o'clock on saturday and he's planning on coming for the uh, for the post game. Uh, yeah, so he's gonna try to. So I talked to him and I don't think I had to push him too hard, twist his arm too hard. So uh, he's like, yeah, he'll be there, he'll see us that evening. So All right.

Tom Frank:

And there's my last little piece of trivia Can you name the high school that has the most guys on this list coming from? I want to see if even Nick knows this.

Biz Besket:

It's gotta be somewhere, somewhere out East, right. I couldn't tell you the name of the high school State College.

Tom Frank:

No, it's not State College. We don't have any State College guys coming.

Biz Besket:

Well, Nick.

Nick Hager:

Nick, you got a. I mean, I see two schools, three schools with two guys, but there is a school with three there's a school with three who would be the third, unless my, unless my.

Biz Besket:

Uh, I think I'm gonna, I'm gonna trust, don't trust this, this guy over here no, I think I'm right here all right I'm gonna give you the guy's names kyle, okay, I?

Nick Hager:

I think I know go ahead, go ahead, tom, kyle, michael and damon. Yep, yeah, that's what I I'm going to give you the guys names Kyle, michael and Damon. I didn't get a chance. I didn't recruit Damon he's an old guy but yeah, that's the one that slipped my mind.

Tom Frank:

Bishop Guilfoyle to Pennsylvania oh there you go. I hold a little special place for BG. It's where my dad went hey wasn't that the BG? It's where my dad went.

Biz Besket:

Hey, wasn't that the site of the four-overtime thriller?

Tom Frank:

Was it at.

Biz Besket:

Tom Frank:

Oh, I don't have the memory like you do, Bish.

Biz Besket:

I remember sitting there and I think Davis made the free throws to win the game and I was sitting next to his dad and his dad was going nuts. Good moment, thank you.

Tom Frank:

Good moment. Thank you, good moment, yes, all right, all right. So here's how it's going to go down. All right, number one pick will go to you. Yeah, it's a charity thing, because you got beat by 80-something to I don't know 50-something.

Biz Besket:

last year you didn't get to 80. You didn't get wanted 80. We kept you down.

Tom Frank:

I thought I got to 80. No, I don't think so. I think I might have. Yeah, all right, inbatable. I'm going to keep my team blue. You're going to keep your team goal? Yeah, I can tell you this. The Glum reached out and he put a line on this game before we even picked players. Wow, that's bold line. I don't make the lines up. This is this. This is how it's going to go. So here's how it's going to get. You're going to get the number one pick yep, but yep, your player has to pick up the phone when you call. Or they're out, right, they're out, they're out. You can't pick them. And I get, I get the. I get the next two picks number two and number three. All right, our first picks will be our captains. They're going to join us if they answer for the rest of the show and they're going to help us out a little bit. All right, are you ready for this? I'm ready. Biz Besket:

Tom Frank:

Biz Besket:

Chase Husted:

Tom Frank:

He did, he did and I think he's been calling me ever since and bet pretty much begging me to be the number one pick. And I love the enthusiasm, I love the hustle of this guy. Biz Besket:

Biz Besket:

John Kelly:

Biz Besket:

are you in philly right now?

John Kelly:

I'm current yes, I'm currently in philly, but I don't live up here anymore all right.

Biz Besket:

So give me, uh, give me the snow forecast and the wind, most importantly I'd say it's three to five inches.

John Kelly:

I mean, we don't have anything out there right now. Three to five inches of snow is what they're saying.

Biz Besket:

Are we going to get?

John Kelly:

wind. Yeah, I don't know about the wind.

Tom Frank:

You don't have exact wind miles per hour.

John Kelly:

No, I don't. There's three to five inches of snow.

Biz Besket:

Look when you're going up against a passing team and there might be a bet placed on the game. You want to know what the wind's going to do.

John Kelly:

Well, with the Eagles, it's always good to stick with the ground game, which they've got. Barkley and Jalen Hurts.

Biz Besket:

Well, the Rams don't have the same ground game. They?

Tom Frank:

got a pretty good one, though we got snow and we got wind.

Tom Frank:

Yeah, you got that going for you. Yeah, all right, john, you going to the game? No, I'm not going to the game. I know, yeah, I have to get down there, all right. So, biz, we were successful with our number one picks. They both answered the phone. They're our captains from here on in all. Right now, john, I I'm gonna have to take a pick with number three pick. That I don't know if you'll agree with or not, but I have to do it for historical reasons. All right, I I have to take a guy who's not even on our list, but I know he's coming back. He might be limited in minutes but I feel like he's still the heart and soul of the team, of team blue. I'm gonna go ahead and take he was our mvp last year jeremy fadeaway, fitness hayes, as our number three pick, overall number two pick on our team. We're going young, we're going old.

Biz Besket:

That's what I'm going is hayes, the oldest guy on the I think he would right.

Tom Frank:

He's a 2014 other than hager, who was in 1955, I think he is we got?

Biz Besket:

we've got our oldest. Uh, brent, is that you?

Nick Hager:

guys get furco's the uh8 grad. He's from LA.

John Kelly:

Oh yeah, he is.

Nick Hager:

Another information he is confirmed to be there next weekend because I don't know if you guys know, he's a huge, huge Bills fan and his family has season tickets, have been going for years. But since Kansas City won last night, you know they're hosting no matter what next weekend. So there's a chance. If Kansas City lost and Buffalo does its thing today, then he wasn't going to be there, yeah, but I think either way, he's going to be attending this weekend. So yeah, Furco takes the crown for oldest alum to be playing Oldest guy.

Tom Frank:

Do we know if he can still run it up and down the court?

Biz Besket:

Do we have any minute restrictions there?

Nick Hager:

I don't think there will be minute restrictions. He still plays. I'm not sure if Chase has played him yet in the Pittsburgh League, but they're in the Pittsburgh League in Wexford.

Tom Frank:

And Furco's still in this league.

Nick Hager:

Yeah.

Biz Besket:

I'm going to have to come watch you guys play. That's my neighborhood.

Chase Husted:

I've seen them both. We haven't played against them, though, yet.

Tom Frank:

How's he look, Chase?

Chase Husted:

He looks good, Strong guy for sure.

Biz Besket:

Chase Husted:

let's talk about this yeah, I play with uh, griffin lecarte, dino brown, tim smith, but sadly tim smith suffered a little injury the last week when we were playing, so I think he's going to be out this upcoming weekend he's, he's blocking.

Biz Besket:

He's, he's in white on the old spreadsheet.

Chase Husted:

That's not good, yeah and uh cole bernarding's on the squad too.

Nick Hager:

We had.

Chase Husted:

John come down one weekend actually, but he wasn't able to play with us that week. Why not?

John Kelly:

John, I didn't make it there until after the game. I made it there late Thursday night.

Tom Frank:

I didn't know if they cut you at the last second because you weren't up to par with them. They weren't going to cut me All right, john, all right weren't up to par with them, they weren't gonna they weren't gonna cut all right, all right, john, all right, all right.

Biz Besket:

So it looks like uh, you get the next two picks, but it's the next two picks. Um, all right, what? Uh, you know what? Okay, now I'm looking. You know, last year, last year I went with the uh, the teammate factor. But you know what? I gotta go? I gotta go with the Swiss Army Knife man. I gotta go with my guy who can play every position On the floor. He's gonna run point guard On this team because Curly didn't Really let him run point guard In the real games. I'm going with Gabe Getting her.

Tom Frank:

Biz Besket:

That's a very good pick is he uh playing down in the philly area dina?

Chase Husted:

I don't know for sure, but I'm hoping he is, you know I've heard.

Tom Frank:

I've heard that all he's done since he's left is eating chicken wings and he's he's bloomed up significantly. Biz, I'm just, that's just what I've heard.

Biz Besket:

Twin towers in the middle, then he's still my point guard. And then you know what man Last year, the all-effort guy last year for me.

Tom Frank:

Don't take the guy I'm thinking.

Biz Besket:

Tom Frank:

Okay, team gold.

Biz Besket:

Okay, good yeah he's my guy last year man. He gave the effort he powered it. I'm going to keep Team Pittsburgh intact.

Tom Frank:

He was a hustler.

Biz Besket:

Griff was my guy man. He went off last year. I'm going with Griff. All right, go with Griff, gabe and Griff the G Love that the double Gs Griff's been playing well in Pittsburgh too. I'm going to have to know when you guys are playing. I'll come watch you play, man. That's literally like five minutes away from my house.

Tom Frank:

All right, john, we got two picks here. I think you take one, I take one. I know who I want because he was another heart and soul guy from the team last year, hey let me look. Okay, you want to talk these through a little bit, or you got it.

John Kelly:

No, I got it. I got a pick, all right.

Tom Frank:

I'm going yeah, you're picking.

John Kelly:

Right now you're on sharpshooter sharpshooter out of uh altuna, pennsylvania.

Tom Frank:

Damon rickens that's exactly who I was going with see, we're right there, we are right there a bg guy was, was the heart and soul of the team last year.

Biz Besket:

John Kelly:

So now the question is do we want to stay old or do we want to go young? We could grab a young guy early. I mean there are going to be young guys, late, late too.

Tom Frank:

I feel like neither one of us should take nate to the last pick, because I I think he, he, he he wants that, he wants that I've enjoyed being the last pick last year yeah, yeah, yeah.

John Kelly:

No, duck's not getting touched till the end of the draft maybe by you guys all right, if we go young, do we go?

Tom Frank:

John Kelly:

I mean, if haze is on a minute minutes restriction, we should probably get, we should probably go get. Go get a guard, let's get kyle, let's get kyle kyle ruggery yep kyle ruggery, 40 minute man, that's what they used to call him I like it and you know what?

Biz Besket:

wait, he runs like marathons and crap doesn't't he, and he's another BG guy.

Tom Frank:

So we're putting the high schools together here.

John Kelly:

Chase Husted:

A lot of good guys out there still, you know.

So I have some chemistry with those guys, chemistry's good man.

Chase Husted:

There's one guy that's catching my eye in particular right now because, all right, he used to be a workhorse back when I played with him, and I'm pretty sure he's still a workhorse. I hope he's been playing, but I don't know. I like nick rigby right now yeah, rigby, he's, he.

Biz Besket:

Yeah, mr huntington, yes, nick rigby.

Tom Frank:

You know he'll be there. You know he'll make it, no matter the weather.

Biz Besket:

You know what he's in Philly now, isn't he?

Tom Frank:

Oh is he? Yeah, I'm glad I didn't take him then, because I was thinking he was right down the street.

Biz Besket:

Rigby, he wants redemption from last year, man.

Tom Frank:

I put him in the wrong color Biz. I'm sorry.

Biz Besket:

He's gold. You cheater, I did I. He's gold.

Tom Frank:

I did, I cheated.

Biz Besket:

All right. So let's see here. We got Gabe, we got Griff, we got Rigby. It's Rigby. Who do you like for guard? Who's playing with you now on the guard side? We need a point guard, we need a facilitator.

Chase Husted:

I mean Cole Bernardin. He's our facilitator here in Pittsburgh.

Biz Besket:

So I wouldn't mind that pick at all. You know what I want to bring them back because I think last year they kind of didn't space the night before in the game.

Tom Frank:

That's always the fear with these younger guys. Two hours later.

Biz Besket:

I think they know Like they've been through it. I like that. Yeah, I'm going with Cole man. He's going to run the point.

Chase Husted:

Nick Hager:

Yeah, I mean somewhat healthy Getting into filming everything today, tomorrow. I mean they return a lot of guys from last year, pretty veteran so, and they're that size Skill at every position. So we'll have our hands full, but yeah, we'll be ready.

Biz Besket:

Get our guys ready. That's pretty much been the theme of the whole league, right? Everybody's veteran, except for you guys, it seems.

Nick Hager:

Yeah you know, I did some A little bit of research Of the Teams we've played so far this year. You know Non-conference seven teams. You know only eight freshmen in the rotation total between those seven teams and in the conference 13 freshmen out of nine teams in the rotation and we're playing anywhere from like eight to nine freshmen. So yeah, old conference. So yeah, it's a little bit different landscape. Got to keep our heads high, we're going to be all right.

Biz Besket:

What happens in college Guys leave Guess what, guess who's going to be the old team in the conference soon.

Nick Hager:

Well, yeah, the Juniata Eagles, yeah, that's the plan, that's the plan going forward.

Tom Frank:

So Chase and John give the team. They need a speech from you guys. What do we need to do? You're going to be there at the game on Saturday. I think that's going to be fun. A little motivation for the guys. They have a lot of alumni in town. What do you tell this team? What do you tell this team to get us a win here?

Chase Husted:

um, I'd probably say, like you got a lot of guys coming back who've played the game, been in their shoes, um, been through the highs and lows that they might be experiencing right now. So it's it's bigger than yourself, it's bigger than um, just the guys playing right now. I mean it's a it's, it's a family, it's a brotherhood. I mean we've all been there. So I just say, if anything, play for the guys coming to support you and play for the guys who've been there and who have experienced it prior to where you're at right now. So it's bigger than yourself. That's all I can say. I've experienced that myself, you know. Seeing the guys come out. It's just a different atmosphere when you have alumni there watching you, guys you've played with in the past. So I mean I just say, like, play for those guys, play for each other Love it.

John Kelly:

John, yeah, exactly what Chase said. I mean, like it really is a great experience, alumni Weekend, like getting everyone to come out. Once the guys on the team see that they kind of realize, like Greg Chase said, it is bigger than myself. Really, what they've got to do is just go out there, play hard, try to execute and just play for the guy next to them and they'll be fine.

Biz Besket:

Yeah, listen, man from Team 1 of Coach Curley, coach curly's tenure, I mean, everybody is tight it's. I haven't seen much like it before. I think it's a great testament to, uh, what's been built by coach curly and coach hager. So you know it's. It's good to actually see it in practice, with all the guys coming back.
